Someone asked a question today about Sustaining Membership. This is a
new program for alumni which was kicked off at the National Convention
in Dallas, so many of you may not have heard of it yet.
Here is some information about what the program is and why it was
created. It's excerpted from the brochure on alumni participation in
the fraternity that was was distributed at the National Convention.
The typos are all mine
"Sustaining Membership: This is a new and special category within the
National Alumni Association designed to provide interested alumni with
an additional level of activity in the Fraternity. A quarterly
newsletter, a special certificate and card, a locator service, and
career network are available to Sustaining Members. The cost of
mailings, special items, and services for Sustaining Members are paid
for by the annual dues of the Sustaing Membership Program. Membership
in a local association, Life Membership, being a financial
contributor, or being a key volunteer are not necessary to be a
Sustaining Member."

"Alpha Phi Omega is a unique experience for many college students
across teh country. Active membership involves lifelong friendships,
providing community service, developing leadership skills, and
enhancing the college education. What happens after an active member
leaves the college campus is another story. Alpha Phi Omega fades
into the recesses of the mind and remains a fine memory for teh alumni
member. The lifelong friendships become a forgotten name. The
community service becomes involvement with children or careers. The
leadership skills are utilized in other organizations. And, the
enhacement to education provided by our Fraternity is soon forgotten.
"Our Fraternity has not provided a strong lifelong link with its alumni
membership. However, Alpha Phi Omega is an organization that needs to
build its strength from its alumni. The leadership to guid the 350
chapters must come from alumni. The financial resources to meet the
increasing pressures to develop more programs and services for the
active membership needs to come from alumni. The role models,
networking, and history should come from alumni. Alumni of Alpha Phi
Omega is a special category of people and vitally needed by our
Fraternity.
"Seeking to increase the lifelong commitment to the Fraternity and to
Community Service by alumni, the Fraternity, through the work of the
National ALumni Commitee and the National Board of Directors, has
developed a membership category within the National Alumni
Association. Sustaining Membership will engage interested alumni in
another level of activity that previously did not exist in Alpha Phi
Omega.
"Sustaining Membership will provide a communications link with Alpha
Phi Omega that will focus on alumni and alumni issues. Sustaining
Membership will provide services that are targeted to assist alumni in
their career/job search through a career network. Sustaining
Membership will provide services that are targetted to assist alumni
in the career/job search through a career network. Sustaining
Membership will provide a volunteer base for the Fraternity so that
prospective volunteers can be recruited and utilized in the most
effective manner. And, Sustaining Membership will provide a means for
alumni members to stay engaged in teh Fraternity and support the
primary mission of Alpha Phi Omega - that of providing community
service through college students."
"As a special incentive, the first 500 alumni members to register
[I believe there is actually a May 1, 1995 cutoff date on this - c.c.]
will be a Charter Sustaining Member. Charter Sustaining Members will
receive a special certificate and card, and distinctive lapel pin."
The fee to become a Sustaining Member is $20/year or $50 for 3 years.
Starting in June, newly graduated brothers will receive a free 1 year
'trial sustaining membership'. (If you're graduating, don't forget to
send your new address to the National Office.) For Sustaining
Membership forms, contact Natalie Williams in the National Office.
