At Delta, there are no written requirements for the DSK. The recipient
of the award is choosen by the quarterly awards committee. Nominations
can be submitted in the form of a letter to the committee. I think that
it takes a unanimous vote of the committee to give the award. There is a
specific "ritual" to be followed in the presentation. It is given at a
banquet or formal (whatever event is our most important dress-up
occassion for the quarter) by the person who last received a DSK
(preferably) or by another DSK holder. The presenter wears the new DSK
around his neck (without wearing his own), reads an awards letter that
has a specific format, and then removes the DSK from his neck and places
it around the neck of the new recipient. If anybody wants to know how
the letter goes, e-mail me and I will type in mine.
In the nine years that I have been around the chapter, we have given out
at most one award a year, and some years we didn't give one. The
recipient must be somebody that has made a lifelong commitment to the
ideals of the fraternity and has exemplified our principles by his
actions and deeds. It so happens that the recipients are usually seniors
since they have been around long enough to meet the qualifications. The
award is not given lightly and the recipients are much respected.
