I know this is becoming a long string, but I'll add my input into discussion.
At the University of Oklahoma, we just recently began awarding service keys,
again. The chapter had at one point gotten down to 6 members, and I
don't think they were all that interested in awards as they were survival.
The guidelines we established went along something like this:
1. The member had to have a member in good standing.
2. They had to show a siginifcant dedication to the chapter over a period
of time, either as an officer or in some leadership capacity.
3. They had to show outstanding support to the service program. (I don't
think we've awarded a DSK to anyone who hasn't averaged over 50 or 60
service hours for a couple of semesters.)
4. They had to exemplify the cardinal principles in their everyday lives.
(As someoone else mentioned, almost always the people who feel they
don't deserve it.)
There may be a few other criteria, but these are the basics. We have
the chapter make nominations to the awards committee, who then require
a unanymous vote. The award is then given at the end of the semester
banquet. We have given out 4 DSK's in the last 3 years, and one of
them was to an alum who served as chapter president for 2 years,
during the lowest point of the membership ebb and brought the chapter
back from the brink of collapse almost single handily.
I don't think that a DSk should an unattainable Holy Grail, but it
is a very serious award and should only be given in those rare
circumstances where someone has done a stellar job as an active
and really embodied the principles of Alpha Phi Omega and taken
them to heart in everything they do. This may sound tough,
but there are people out there like that. I don't think our
chapter here at Oklahoma has ever regretted awarding a DSK to someone
We also have a lot of other chapter awards which we award on a more regular
basis.
They include:
Leadership Award - for outstanding leadership
Service Award - for outstanding commitment to the service program.
Best New Active - for those who are new actives (1st semester)
Best Pledge - self explanatory
Commitment Award - those who have shown outstanding commitment
to the chapter, but for someone reason don't
merit a DSK. (Usually for outgoing seniors)
This concludes my rant on awards, thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Chris Stockdale
