Ok, I was a Senator for SGa at Frostburg for a few years, and might be able
to help. After all, I got us funding for both the 92 and 94 national
conventions.

Just a note: SGA's the world over who hand out money are notoriously
inconsistent in their allocations. It is horrible, and in spite of my
best efforts to the contrary, I couldn't change the system at FSU, and
you won't be able to either, probably.

So, on to the answers,

Jonathan

>SGA asked a number of questions of groups coming in. I could use much
>help on some good answers. ESPECIALLY on first three questions!
>
>(1) What is the purpose of the conference?

Foster leadership training and experiences; develop ideas for service projects
and make contacts with the community service community; bring home new ideas
for leadership programs, communications, service, and development of the
chapter members; promote your school - win awards (man-mile, service, roll
call, etc); show off your school; fundraising ideas; diversity development and
environmental sensitivity

>
>(2) What will the rest of the student body gain by you all going to this
>conference?

Emphasize the size of your chapter, so direct benefits to them; campus-wide
community service projects; impact of your projects on campus and community;
leadership training; potential for growth of your chapter; greater name
recognition for school; your chapter could put on seminars of what you
learned; increased sensitivity to diversity and environment

>
>(3) What will you being doing at conference?

Leadership training; communications; service, service, service; leadership,
leadership, leadership; networking; diversity development and discussion

>(5) Have you tried other sources or fundraiser? - answer no to both, but
>what's a good open answer.

Why haven't you? It is very hard to justify giving 100% to any group, no
matter how worthy. How much are you paying from the chapter funds? Emphasize
this. Check the SGA rules to see what is allowed to be funded (ie no banquet)
and stress this as out of your pockets.

>
>(6) Why should we give you this money?

Benefits to the students; it is student's money and you are students; benefits
to the community and campus; you are a recognized student org and hence
entitled (if this is the case); going towards diversity causes, leadership,
and service.

>(8) The conference isn't till February, why are you applying for funds now?

Not enough time to apply in the spring; getting a head start; required early
registration and hotel reservations/deposit; planning on calendar; want to
get $$ while they are still available

>
>(9) Why isn't your group paying anything? (note: we have $15 dues)

Very good question...see my answer to #5. I voted on hundreds of thousands
of dollars in allocations, but cannot remember one time I voted for 100%
to anyone, and especially when they haven't done any work on their own
behalf (ie dues, fundraising, out-of-pocket). Nobody deserves a free ride,
but everyone deserves help.
