When I was at the Boston 92 Convention I attended
a session addressing the importance of "balance"
in the program of Alpha Phi Omega. The program
presenter used the three cardinal principles to
illustrate this "balance" and spoke of the
importance of making sure that the chapter
program include enough activities in each area.
Very brief version of a 50 minute workshop:
For if a chapter has too much service you might
miss meeting the needs of students that joined for
the opportunities of leadership or friendship.
If a chapter has too many fellowship or friendship
activities the chapter might as well be a social
greek letter organization. Neglecting those that
joined for the service and the leadership.
If a chapter has too much leadership...then you
get the idea. The presenter (whose name
escapes me now three years later.) drew a
stool. (I will try here to represent it on e-mail):
ALPHA PHI OMEGA
----------------------------------------------
| | | | | |
| | | | | |
| L | | F | | S |
| | | | | |
If Chapters focus too much in one area the
stool will become lopsided and fall over. I
really believe that chapters need to maintain
balance between the three areas to be effective
in their programming.
