CARDINAL, a. [L. cardinalis, from cardo, hinge, that on which something turns
or depends.] 1. chief, principal, pre-eminent, or fundamental; as the
cardinal virtues.
(Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary, 1983)
By this definition, we cannot set any of the three cardinal principles above
the others. If we were to do so, the remaining two would cease to be
cardinal. In addition each of the principles of leadership, friendship, and
service aids in developing the others.
In the current discussion, there are two questions being asked: why do we use
the word service as the primary description for the fraternity, when it is
not the single most important principle of our organiation; and why are we
placing such importance on leadership and friendship when we are a service
fraternity. Both of these questions have one answer.
We describe ourselves to the world as a SERVICE FRATERNITY, because these two
words together make us unique. Although most fraternities do some service,
and many clubs are primarily service organizations, we are the only
FRATERNITY to hold the concept of human SERVICE so highly. The use of the
word service in our description does not list our most important principle.
Instead, it helps to describe simply and concicely what makes us unique as an
organization.
