I am sorry that I could not take part in the original debate yesterday, I
read this list in Digest mode.  The following is my contribution.

I would not go as far as say that it is a bad idea; however, you are
correct in the "risks" that could possibly be involved.  I see a
phonebook published on the web as no different than one published in
paper.  We just think we control who sees the paper version.  As for
security on the Internet.  I believe that an encrypted credit card number
is more secure than one spoken vocally over the phone.  I also believe
that the same applies for passwords.  Remember, system security is
violated when the first account is created.  Back to the original topic,
Every individual has a right to be "unlisted".

This does remind me of a story, at ODU someone picked up a copy of the
student phone directory, cut out every name and address and pasted it to
a flier and put it in the mail, they could have just as easily done it by
retyping the entire directory, but the did not, they used what was
already printed.  Wether the directory is on the Web or in paper makes no
difference to myself or the determined advertiser.
