I emailed this to the origionator personally but, after seeing so many
brothers plead the fifth, I feel compelled to post:

As founding father president of Alpha Delta Alpha chapter at Rutgers
Camden, I had the opportunity to chair the debate over many of the
bylaws that we created. Many of the brothers in our chapter were/are
education majors. In the field of education there is a strong debate over
objective grading vs. subjective grading.
Currently, there is a growing trend to head back to subjective grading
assessments (alternative assessments, authentic assessments, true
assessments, whatever you want to call them). The idea is this: If you
want to see what someone does NOT know, give them a test. If you want
to see what they CAN DO, have them perform and measure how well they
do. A clear grading scale should be set up before hand (Rubrix scale) to
ensure some objectivity and consistency in the grading.
I believe that it is UNFAIR to measure someone completely objectively.
There are subjective qualities that matter. We created a set of objective
cryteria that had to be met by each pledge, but we left it up to the
membership to vote a pledge to the level of elevation. We required an
affirmative vote of the chapter to elevate figuring if the pledge met the
objective guidelines, and we still didn't want them, the chapter would
vote against. I think the mix of objective and subjective qualities is a
NECESSARY and DESIRABLE element in any pledge program.
