Hello all,
Well, over the last couple of days I've seen my name mentioned
a number of times and thought maybe I should speak up and say
something. (I would have sooner, but I like doing so right after I
get a digest so I don't feel silly repeating other's words that I
didn't mean to.)
A lot of talk has gone into reserving or acquiring an internet
domain name for Alpha Phi Omega (from the nice people at InterNIC).
Most of it has concentrated on www.apo.org, some people listed other
possibilities, www.alphaphiomega.org (yuck, too much typing) or
www.a-phi-o.org were the specific examples. C'mon people, those
aren't domain names, they're machine names. The domain name would be
simply apo.org, etc., no www! :)
But technical names for names aside, a resultant debate would
be _what_ the domain name should be, which I consider to be rather
silly. To illustrate why, here are the domain names (yes, plural) for
my modem company, Global Village Communications, Inc.:
globalcenter.net
globalvillag.com
globalvillage.com
gvil.com
And if you would guess that www.(any above domain name) all map to the
same web server (198.93.140.30) you'd be absolutely right. So it
really doesn't matter what name we pick so long as we pick them all.
I personally would prefer aphio.org, but that's just the way I am, I
know many others prefer apo.org, and for those who detest abbreviations
alphaphiomega.org may seem the only way to go... it doesn't matter, we
should be able to get all three when we actually get the address space
(unless one's already taken), after all the domain names are nothing
more than aliases to the actual ip numerical address space, who cares
how many aliases we have! (and there's precedence to boot!)
But what originally brought all this up I believe was John
Grossi's comments on the new national electronic disclaimer. I will
address only the logistics of continued word spreading about the
disclaimer to new APhiO USA (since the disclaimer does not apply to
APhiO Phil.) web sites. A copy (two actually) of the original email
from Dave Emery about and including the disclaimer have been on my
site since the day before it was originally posted to APO-L. (Dave
sent me an advanced copy for commentary.) It is stored both in my
administrative section and in my About APhiO/News Tidbits from APO-L
subsection. This makes it readily available at all times in an
unmodified form.
Dave also asked if I would include a blurb about the
disclaimer when I post the monthly all-known-APhiO-www-sites list,
which I have modified to include already. The list went out shortly
before the disclaimer came out so this monthly reminder won't start
hitting until the 1995 December 31 version of the list is published.
Also, I have decided to take it upon myself that whenever I
add a link to a new APhiO USA site (or modify an entry to an existing
one) that if I don't see the disclaimer already present at that site
(since I always look at the new sites, half to verify the URL, half
curiosity), that I will bring the disclaimer (or lack thereof) to the
attention of that site's maintainer. That's probably as good as can
be done for making sure no one is just unwittingly leaving it out.
That's it for me, the thing I find funniest about this, is now
there is something that all APhiO USA sites can have and call it
"official", a notice that nothing in the site should be considered
"official"... I love oxymoronic states of being! (E.g. If I told you
everything I said was a lie, would you believe me?)
