I'm sorry for the cross post, but I forgot which list this has been
circulating on, so I posted to both of them.
After reading some of the posts that have been flying around on this list
and on SOC, I have to say that I'm rather disappointed with some people
in this fraternity. I know all of you know what is important to us as a
group, but what I can't understand is why there is such fierce debate as to
whether or not the abbreviation for our organization (for example on an
internet site) should be apo, aphio, aphiq, or something else. Who cares?
Someone mentioned that they know at least one entire chapter that would
get offended if the abbreviation is apo, and not aphio. I think all of those
people need to get out a bit more often. See, to me, what counts is what
we do, and it doesn't matter what we're called. APO, to me is the exact
same thing as APhiO, which is the exact same thing as APhiQ. The fact
that someone can actually get offended because someone refers to Alpha
Phi Omega as APO is just ridiculous. It seems to me that these people are
very insecure of either their own brotherhood or something else (I'm not
accusing anyone of anything, just stating my observations). I know that since
I do system work for a local internet provider, that there is an
unwritten protocol in choosing a name for a site. It is supposed to be
able to clue users in as to what organization owns the site, and it's
supposed to be short. When it comes down to it, apo is shorter than
APhiO, and they both say the same thing. To me it is a waste of time (not
to mention bandwidth) to argue over a point that is essentially moot. If
the national office decides to go with apo.org, what are you gonna do,
secede from the fraternity? My point is that it's useless to argue about
stuff like that because whatever the national office decides, is what's
gonna happen. That's all there is to it. Let's be sensible adults and
move on to a better discussion, such as what services the apo site can,
should, or will offer.
Just venting, and giving my $.02
YiLFS,
Sidd
