Hi. Two posts appeared on APOSOC-L and there were no rebuttals
(except Jana telling the posters to keep the thread on APO-L)
so I posted this over there. I realized similar things have
been said already on APO-L, but I thought this particular phrazing
might hit home for some...

Sigh. Jana, I know this is a thread on APO-L, but I haven't been reading
that lately, and I've seen two posts here, so I just HAD to respond in the
forum I saw them in. Ban me if you must.

I am straight, and I am tolerant of all preferances (good grief, I lived
with Vivs for two years, if that isn't tolerant, I don't know what is),
but there is one thing which tries my patience--intolerance.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that these posts which SEEM to preach
tolerance in fact breed the worst kind of INtolrance: backlash. I can
understand and sympathise with the discomfort felt by people who cannot
get past the ingrained sociological belief that people who do not conform
to their norms are "bad". It surprises and shocks me, however, that
people would use the concept of "tolerance" as a banner for driving a
demographic group out of any organization, especially ours.

Alpha Phi Omega is supposed to breed the future leaders of the world, and
none of use are perfect when we pledge. Wouldn't it be better to NURTURE
tolerance and help people LEARN to deal with others who think differently
rather than driving them out? How are we supposed to bring about a more
perfect world if the people who need APO the most are given the cold
shoulder? Frank Reed Horton said he was "impressed with the religious
tolerance in the hearts of the boys" at the Easton Scout Reservation.
If he were here today, would he be impressed by our tolerance?

Just a few thoughts to meditate on...
YiLFS,
