How's everybody doing? (Fine!) Great, 'cause I'm not. (smile)

Anyway, I want to wish everybody a belated Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year and a Happy 70th anniversary, and a Happy birthday to all those who have one coming in 1996.

Now for my topic:

About a year ago, I posted numerous messages about the plight of Alpha
Phi Omega chapters at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs) and
about my relationships as an A-Phi-O/Q Brother with the Big 9 (No, I won't talk
about Big 9 any time soon). I got some GREAT feedback from numerous brothers,
including Elizabeth Yow, Randy Finder, Lee Peters, Barb Anderson, Neal Farmer,
Maggie Katz, Caroline & Liston Bias, Teri Sheets, Monica Cole, Paula Wesson, and (Your Name Here if I did not mention you). I gotta give credit where credit is due. I want to post an update on the status of the A-Phi-O chapters
at the HBCUs, and there is a reason for doing such, which I will state at the
end of the listing. This time, I will break it down into the following categories:

Active
Pseudo-Active (meaning the National Office has declared it INACTIVE, but the
chapter is functioning as though it is fully active--an illegal
               practice.
Petitioning Group
Inactive for Hazing
Fully Inactive
*-indicates that the chapter is predominately black, but not @ an HBCU.
?-indicates that I am not certain about the information (but then again, I am not certain about the accuracy of this listing). I'm goin' 4 broke. Here goes.

This list is accurate as of March 1995's e-mail

Active:
        Zeta Phi (Howard)
        Kappa Delta (Fla. A&M)
        Kappa Psi (N.C. A&T)
        Pi Zeta (Tuskeegee)
Rho Epsilon (Savannah State)--currently under suspension for hazing.
        Sigma Pi (Prairie View A&M)
Tau Zeta (Texas Southern)--Great article in the Fall '94 T&T
        Phi Zeta (Ft. Valley State)
        Chi Nu (Grambling)
        Chi Upsilon (Dillard)
        Psi Lambda (Rust College)
        Alpha Epsilon (Louisiana State)*
        Psi Nu (Benedict)
(oops, Psi Nu is not active. Sorry)
Alpha Alpha Sigma (N.E. La. State)

Petitioning Group:
        Kappa Pi (Wiley)
        Omicron Gamma (W. Va. State)?
        Pi Omega (Kentucky State)?
Rho Omicron (U. of Md. @ Eastern Shore)--Has been told petitioning is
                     in limbo)

Pseudo-Active (none of these I am 100% certain about):
        Delta Phi (Johnson C. Smith)
        Nu Iota (Bethune-Cookman College)
        Psi Nu (Benedict)
        Alpha Beta Theta (Morris)

Inactive for Hazing:
Kappa Lambda (Southern @ Baton Rouge)?
Tau Gamma (Southern @ New Orleans)
        Sigma Chi (Miami-Dade Community College)?
Zeta Nu (Southern Ill. U. @ Carbondale)*
        ??????? (Troy State)?*
        Phi Phi (Fla. Memorial)
Psi Phi (Tennessee State)--I was told that ironically that the same
person who want to form a petitioning group is also the one
who perpetrated the hazing. Umm, Umm, Umm).
        Omega Psi (Jackson State)

Fully Inactive:
Iota Epsilon (Central State)--There is an interest in forming a
petitioning group, but to date has yet to inform the Re-
gion V director of such intent. This may be a moot point
as there is talk of possibly shutting down CSU. Details
                      forthcoming.
        Pi Alpha (Philander Smith)
        Sigma Mu (Va. Union)
        Sigma Omicron (Howard Payne)
        Sigma Omega (Lincoln U.--Pa.)
Tau Delta (N.C. Central @ Durham)
        Tau Pi (Delaware State)
        Tau Chi (Winston-Salem U)
        Upsilon Kappa (St. Augustine U)
        Upsilon Chi (Clark-Atlanta)
        Phi Mu (Norfolk State)
        Phi ???(Fayetteville)
        Chi Lambda (Elizabeth City State)
        Psi Alpha (Berry College)
Psi Zeta (Paul Quinn College--formerly Bishop)
        Psi Xi (Morehouse)
-oops, Morehouse is Psi Omicron; Psi Xi is Alabama State
        Psi Sigma (Albany State)
Psi Tau (Viginia State)--Va. Commonwealth U (ADI chapter) wants to help
the chapter get back on it's feet, I gave some suggestions,
dunno if they are working or not.
Psi Psi (U. of Ark. Pine Bluff)
        Omega Zeta (Durham College)
        Omega Lambda (Fisk)
        Omega Phi (Tougaloo)
        Alpha Alpha Iota (Barber-Scotia)
        Alpha Alpha Lambda (Alcorn)
Alpha Beta Upsilon (Broward Comm. Coll.)*

CONCLUSION (as reinford
-as reinforced by National Staff:
Many HBCU students use Alpha Phi Omega as an alternative to the Big 9.
It has been said that if you are not wearing Greek letters, you're a nobody.
To some extent, I can vouch for that, being a former HCBU student myself.
I must ask, aside from the hazing justification, is using our fraternity as an
alternative to the socials wrong. I would think that every brother would have
that same mentality. Or is hazing the factor that sets the HBCU chapters apart
from the mainstream? If you have an answer or theory, or if you have a list correction to make, please e-mail me. I cannot check my e-mail as frequently due to work commitments, but I will read and respond when possible.

Peace.
