I would like to voice my 2 cents about changing the day of NSD to
a date of an already recognized national service day/week etc....
First off - isn't APO's National Service Day one of the the first - if not
_the_ first national service day in the USA???
therefore NSD would already be a recognized national service day....
also - by moving it to coincide with something like make a difference day
we cheapen what NSD is.... APO was one of the founding groups to put such
a high and national spin on doing service....
everyone else copied us...
by changing the date to be - lets say on make a difference day - we are
sending the message that we did not come up with this idea - we are
copying them instead of the other way around....
I agree that this would give us more PR and national exposure - but
that is because they have full time PR people and a big budget....
not college students devoting their time and hearts to service....
that is what makes us special....
this is what makes us unique - and I think better....
By keeping our own date we are shining a light on a valued tradition
something that we can say dates back to _way_ before all of this
service emphasis in the media today....
we were the first, the only.... and we still are....
I would rather explain to a member of the press that our NSD is something
that has been around for a while - and go on to explain what APO is and
why they ought to take an interest to us....
instead I might be answering one question for a sound bite to be added with
a bunch of other sound bites that all go into one huge report about
what everyone in the city did for "......" day.
Now - on the question of changing the date completely - I'd prefer something
a little closer to the middle of a semester.... having it so soon after
school starts uis a problem since it is both the beginning of a semester as well as
rush season.... having it too late makes it hard to plan amid finals...
I'd like it smack in the middle of a semester.....
just my own preference (it would also make it easier to get Xi Alpha
back on track to participating in NSD - I'm not sure when we stopped...
Hy, maybe you remember.... but I'd like to see us start again...)
