Before the Boston Convention, the Roll Call followed the opening banquet, with
everyone singing/chanting/whatever from their table. Most were *very* difficult
to hear, people felt an obligation to stay there and try to listen, and it held
up the dance or whatever social event was planned that evening.

In '92 we moved it out of the banquet and structured it as a staged competition
to control the time and promote a positive spirit. The idea of using roll call
songs or chants has been very popular as a way to kick off things. No one should
feel obligated to sit there all night; just like the other social events, you
can wander in and out at will, or skip the whole thing if it does not interest
you. However, this requires an obvious predetermined order - such as Greek alpha
order- so you know when *your* chapter is up, should you decide to participate.
