On Thursday(?) a Brother and I were watching a new show called _The_Grant_.
It set up simple senarios to see who will go the extra mile to help a person
in need. The person/group who provides the most help is presented with a
$5,000 grant and gets to be on the show via hidden cameras and all that stuff.
Well...one of the teasers before a commercial said they were going to be
back with some college guys who "won" the grant. Stacy and I jokingly said
"Wouldn't it be cool if they were APO." When they came back from commercial
they set up the situation. Their actor would wander a grocery store totally
clueless in is quest to cook a dinner for his girlfriend. Well, some people
suggested he buy a cookbook, or said they didn't know much about cooking
either. No one would seem to help in San Antonio, TX so the show moved on
(serves 'em right after the National Conference mess). Well, they found
their helpers...three fraternity brothers from the University of Texas...and
could you imagine our delight when one of them was wearing a T-Shirt with
"Alpha Phi Omega" on it! I don't know if all 3 were APO Brothers, but at
least one was! Then, when the $5,000 was presented (only one of the guys
could make it to the presentation), the guy was sure it was a mistake...he
didn't want the money. An example of true Service.
To finish things off...in true APO style, the 3 guys threw a "Bachelor
Party" for the actor...fiancee or not. :) (With $5,000 in their
pockets...that must have been QUITE a party!)
Just thought you'd like to know how Alpha Rho chapter pulled thru for APO on
national TV. Also, I'd ask you to personally consider how helpful you are.
If you found someone with a flat tire and no spare, would you take them to a
gas station? If you found someone looking for their lost car keys, would
you help them go get a spare set...and help them with their groceries that
are in dire need of refrigeration? How helpful would you actually be?
Remember that next time you need assistance and no one is helping...or the
next time you find someone in need of a small favor. Go the extra mile!
LFS!
