A Cub Scout pack I'm involved with has the same problem with
insurance. Here is what we found out:
Your homeowner's insurance may have a personal liability clause. Your
potential advisor could check his policy to see if he is already
covered.
Your university probably has insurance to cover faculty/staff when
working with registered or recognized organizations. The Personell
Office may have that information.
If worse comes to worse, a personal liability insurance policy runs
about $300 per year for $1,000,000 coverage. This price will vary
greatly from place to place. Your local Boy Scout office (or Girl
Scouts or any agency which deals with youth) should be able to refer
you to a list of local insurance agencies which carry such policies.
