programs, programs, programs.
Seems easy to say but is hard to do, without burning out existing
members. Go with easy programs in all three areas.
Leadership.
Require them to attend one or two leadership development activities.
These activities can be sponsored by the university, an outside agency or
APO (your chapter or another chapter close by.)
Friendship.
Socials are a little easier to do. Bowling night. $1.50 movie night.
Theme party at a brothers (no alcohol of course, lots of games, and
activities). A social with another chapter. Paintball. Ice skating.
restaurant night. Bar-B-Que. Swimming. Theme parks. and more
Service.
The easiest and most difficult. It is a hard line to have the correct
amount of service projects. Too many and the chapter feels frazzled.
Too few and the chapter suffers. There are plenty of ideas out there for
service projects.
How it keep them interested? Get them involved in the planning process
immediately. Help them develop ownership of the chapter program.
Require the pledge class to plan a service project or two, a fellowship
or two and a fundraiser or two. Keep the pledge meetings interesting.
Quiz them on APO information, but keep it fun and serious. ( A tootsie
role or other candy for a correct answer. Follow the suggested pledge
topics in the Leader Series from the national office.
And do what you are doing know. Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask
the pledges that pass and fail how the program can be improved for the
next semester. Also, don't be afraid to not activate some pledges if
they did not meet all of the pledge requirements. This helps keep the
integrity of the program. however, some of our best brothers failed the
first time and re-pledged again. That's dedication! If they value the
program they will work for it.
Finally, let them know everything that is required to become a pledge and
stick to it, like a contract. If you want a copy of our pledge program,
send my your snail mail address, and I will send you a brief sheet.
