After speaking with Section 89 Chair Dave Gates, we have decided to pursue
getting a National Service Day proclamation from New York State Governor
George Pataki. In order to do this, we are mailing a letter with a sample
proclamation to Governor Pataki. To increase the chances that Pataki will
sign the proclamation, we also hope that other chapters in New York State
will consider writing a letter to Pataki asking that National Service Day
be officially recognized. The letter below is based on the template posted
on APO-L a few months ago, with a few liberal modifications. Feel free to
modify it as much as you want, but please consider sending it out as soon
as possible. If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to

In support of the spirit of volunteerism, we ask that you proclaim Saturday,
November 2,1996 as Service Day 1996 in the State of New York. We hope that
you agree to support our efforts in this important cause.
On November 2, Alpha Phi Omega - the nation's largest service fraternity -
will participate in National Service Day 1996. Our organization has sponsored
this event annually since 1979. This years national program of emphasis is
Natural Disaster Preparedness and Personal Safety. Our chapters will organize
service projects to help prepare for appropriate responses to emergency
situations.
Your proclamation would help us to focus attention on the importance of
helping others and the world around us, specifically through our Service Day
efforts.
Such attention will help us also to introduce volunteerism to individuals who
might not otherwise become involved in their communities.
The primary purpose of Alpha Phi Omega, founded in 1925, is service to the
campus, community, and the nation. We have chartered more than 650 chapters on
college campuses nationwide, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
Utica College, St. Lawerence University, SUNY College at Oneonta, SUNY
College at Plattsburgh, SUNY College at New Paltz, University at Albany -
SUNY, Clarkson University, University of Rochester, SUNY at Buffalo, SUNY
College at Oswego, Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Envionmental
Science and Forestry, Alfred University, Cornell University, Rochester
INstitute of Technology, SUNY College at Fredonia, St. Bonaventure
University, SUNY College at Geneseo, SUNY at Brockport. The service that
the students involved in Alpha Phi Omega render is rewarded only by the
satisfaction they receive in contributing to their colleges and
communities, and all but a very few staff members volunteer both their time
and resources in
maintaining our organization.
