The Rochester area chapters (RIT,UofR,Brockport...) have contacted the
Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross about spending NSD
taking several basic level disaster courses such as INTRO TO DISASTER
SERVICES, MASS CARE OVERVIEW, and DAMAGE ASSESSMENT.
Before I tell you what we're doing here, let me give you a little
background. APO started out in disaster services last January. We have
accomplished so much over the past spring that the Florida's Coast to
Coast Chapter (FL-CTC) of the Red Cross designated our team as sole
coordinator for all Red Cross function on the Embry-Riddle campus. So,
basically, any Red Cross volunteer at Riddle had to come through us. We
generated a lot of interest and new volunteers. We ran into a political
problem... other groups such as the Rotaract, Embry Riddle Amateur Radio
Association, etc. wanted to get involved but dissented against being
under the APO umbrella. So, as of last week, a new independent student
organization has been formed: American Red Cross - Embry-Riddle
Auxiliary. Of course, I'm the President... But this way, people can
volunteer as individuals for Red Cross without any implied affiliation
with any other group.
So, now... for National Service Day, APO is coordinating with the
Auxiliary to provide Community Disaster Education (CDE) courses for the
campus, such as "Are you ready for a hurricane?" "Preparing for
disasters" etc.
So, there's two ideas: 1.) Get your Brothers trained as disaster volunteers
2.) Sponsor community disaster education classes
Best way to accomplish either is to simply call your local Red Cross
chapter and ask to speak to Disaster Services.
