Hi, I'm pres at Gamma Kappa at TCU and have recently had worries
of "over-active" alumni, that is, alumni talking too much at meeting or
even making motions. Thankfully, it has not yet come up. What i've done
is to try to make it clear that alumni are there to offer insights,
exper., advise, etc., when they are asked, and that actives' opinions
take precedence over theirown. When phrased diplomaticly, they have
always been uinderstanding and realize that they have graduated and it is
time to "cut the umbilical cord" and let the younger actives have
chances for leadership.
In our chapter, we vote on advisors. If your's does, too, and
he is known as a problem, then the chapter may just simply not vote him
in, aleviating your problem.
Also keep in mind that advisors DO NOT VOTE and DO NOT MAKE
MOTIONS at meetings. They simply ADVISE. If you and chapter choose to
listen to his advise, nod,smile, say thank you, and then do as you
please, then he can't do anything about it. He can rant and rave all he
wants, and the more he does, and the more it is against what most of the
chapter wants to do, the more he will alienate himself and probably not
be re-elected as an advisor. In short, if his views are contrary to the
chapter's, let him rant and rave, do what you choose anyway ( itmight
also help to get support from the other advisors), and he will eliminate
himself.
I realize a lot of this depends on election of advisors and onhow
contrary his opinions are to the rest of the chapter, but it might help.
