Subject: Webstock '96
Dear Campus Leaders and Coordinators,
We are excited to tell you about Webstock '96 (www.webstock96.com), a new
virtual community launched with a four-day online festival, dedicated to
bringing young people together to connect with one another, have fun, and
share their experiences about improving their communities. Webstock,
organized by the national non-profit DO Something, will feature the latest
technology to create a community online which over 500,000 people are
expected to visit during the live festival from November 1- 4, 1996. (Some
interesting actors, musicians and politicians will be there too.) After the
festival ends, the site will host a number of regional chat sessions,
leadership training programs, and outreach efforts directed toward teachers
and students. By holding the online gathering, we expect to engage many
young people in thoughtful discussions about important social issues, allow
leaders to share success stories, enable the non-profit community to learn
what's out there, and help link people together around the common goal of
building individual and community capacity.
There are many ways that college students can get involved:
1) Become the Webstock '96 representative at your school; you can spread the
WORD on Webstock by hanging up eye-catching POSTERS that we send you,
distributing POSTCARDS around campus, and e-mailing student groups. All you
have to do is express your interest, and e-mail us at dowebstock@aol.com, and
we can work together on informing the public about Webstock. Let us know how
many posters you want!
2) Talk to the appropriate people at your computer center to allow children
from the community to use the computers during the festival (November 1-4,
1996). If you are interested in establishing Webstock festival access as a
service project at your school, e-mail us at dowebstock@aol.com and we'll
send you more information.
3) Link up with student-kids tutoring/mentoring programs on campus to
organize a Webstock project in which students and kids go online together;
4) If you or someone you know has started or organized an interesting
community service project at your school, lead a chat session or workshop at
Webstock; e-mail us at dowebstock@aol.com with your name, project, and idea
for a chat session.
4) Let us know other ways in which college students can get involved with
Webstock. We welcome your ideas.
