I have a special request on which I'm seeking your assistance. I'm
currently serving on the Emerging Leaders Program committee being
assembled as part of INDEPENDENT SECTOR's annual membership meeting
in Seattle in mid-October. The Emerging Leaders Program is
specifically desgined for those persons NEW to the nonprofit sector
(mostly those under 30, plus professionals in career transition and
underrepresented groups, too) and which engages them in professional
and leadership development activities. Essentially, its a way to
increase the involvement of YOUTH in the nonprofit community by
increasing their skills and interest in nonprofits.
Anyway, I've been asked to put together a RESOURCE TABLE at the
conference containing materials that will give these persons
new to the sector a clearer idea of what the "next step" is as far as
remaining actively involved in nonprofit work--either as a volunteer
or as a professional. Items that I'm looking to include are:
* promotional materials from ACADEMIC CENTERS across the country
that offer degrees/concentrations/courses in an area relating
to the NONPROFIT world, like management, philanthropy,
volunteerism, etc. Does your school offer anything like
this?;
* INFORMATION ABOUT nonprofit organizations which have a
"youth focus" insofar as they provide opportunities for
young people to "get involved" in some way. Examples include
COOL, DoSomething, Campus Compact, etc. How can young people
who are already involved/interested in service build
upon thier work in a greater capacity? Doesn't necessarily
have to be "campus-based", either, and those which provide
some form of compensation are particularly desirable;
* INFORMATION ABOUT orgs. which offer PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMS/TRAINING in an area relating to the work of the
nonprofit world, including advocacy, lobbying, grassroots
organizing, STARTING YOUR OWN NONPROFIT!, etc.;
* FACTS and FIGURES (hard statistics or studies) which focus on
YOUTH involvement in either the nonprofit world, either as
volunteers or a career professional. What are the TRENDS
in this area? What are the average salaries in nonprofits?
What do young people--or persons in general--cite as their
motivations for getting involved in nonprofit work?, etc.;
* QUOTES or even short INTERVIEWS w/ persons who have
recently become invovled in the nonprofit world.
Again, what motivated them to pursue this avenue?
What do they find most rewarding about their
work/service? How are they planning to build upon their
experience in the nonprofit world to advance their
professional development?, etc.
* PUBLICATIONS or LITERATURE REVIEWS/BIBLIOGRAPHIES in any of
these areas. What's out there that persons new to the sector
can read to increase their familiarity w/ nonprofits and
what opportunities they provide?
As I mentioned earlier, the whole idea of the Emerging Leaders
Program at IS's annual meeting is to FOSTER INCREASED INVOLVEMENT IN
NONPROFITS among those populations NEW to the sector. The resource
table is there to actually have materials on-hand that these Emerging
Leaders can have and pursue as they choose. Can't enourage folks
to increase their involvement w/out giving them some concrete options
to do so, you know?
Long story short: If you CAN PROVIDE any of the requested items
(gratis, of course. we are "nonprofits", don't forget) for
inclusion at the display table, I'd love to know! OR, if you can
suggest organizations or materials that SHOULD be included but w/
which you're not actually connected, I'd like to know that too so I
can contact them.
