This discussion has also started on the VOLUNTEERS mailing list, which
people may be interested in for other discussion as well. Send the
message "SUBSCRIBE VOLUNTEERS" to listserv@listserv.aol.com to
subscribe. Someone on that list thought this case was about a high
school student. Someone also mentioned that a similiar (or same?) case
in Pennsylvania was declined by the Supreme Court- in that case the
students were active in community service, but felt that making it a
requirement defeated the point of volunteering (and their case was based
on the prohibition of slavery).
Someone suggested The Community as Classroom: Learning from
Service in Maryland", by Suzanne Goldsmith, published in the Summer 1995
issue of Who Cares magazine as a good article on the topic that explored
Maryland's program.
