I am writing to inform all members of the list--students, educators,
and any interested parties--that The Washington Center for Internships
and Academic Seminars will offer the INDEPENDENT SECTOR: ISSUES AND
CAUSES academic seminar from December 29, 1996 - January 11, 1997.
The program will be held in Washington, D.C. and is open to college
students (both undergrad. and grad.). Students can earn up to 3
credits from their school for participation in the program.
Applications are now available and the DEADLINE for applying is
NOVEMBER 18, 1996. SCHOLARSHIPS ($) are available on a limited basis
so please plan on applying early. Additionally, we are seeking
qualified FACULTY persons to serve in paid positions for the duration
of the program. More on that later.
For your further information, the Independent Sector: Issues and
Causes academic seminar will bring a diverse group of up to 100
students to D.C. to participate in the second installment of this
program, which is specifically designed to develop leadership for the
nation's growing NONPROFIT community. A special emphasis is placed
on examining those nonprofits which focus on community/public
service, volunteerism, philanthropy, and policy advocacy.
During the 2 week program, students will interact w/ the leadership
of some of America's most respected and influential independent
sector organizations and learn more about the broad range of issues
that impact upon and motivate the nonprofit community. Students will
also learn more about the various functional areas within nonprofits
as a way to increase their professional skills. These include:
* nonprofit management;
* community/public service;
* lobbying and policy advocacy;
* grantmaking and grantseeking;
* grassroots organizing and constituency building;
* professional societies and trade associations;
* pursuing careers within the independent sector
As part of the program, students will also participate in a special
"mentoring" component as well as an organized community service
project. As an academic program, students are required to complete a
series of assignments designed to help them more fully integrate the
"hands-on" learning that they will experience during the seminar.
Students will be led in daily small group discussions by qualified
Faculty Leaders who are responsible for evaluating each student in
their group and assigning a final recommended grade. These faculty
persons will be selected based on their academic and practical
experience in an area relating to some aspect of the nonprofit or
service-oriented communities.
If you are a student active and interested in issues of broad social
concern such as hunger, homelessness, human/civil rights, health care,
disabilities, environmentalism, cultural awareness, or family/child
welfare, among many others, you should apply NOW! You can request an

working days. The program is competitive and selection will be based
on the history of service and leadership potential that each
applicant demonstrates. Students who are accepted will be given 2
weeks to confirm their attendance after notification. Otherwise,
alternates will be selected.

inside or outside of the classroom working in an area relating
directly to the nonprofit world, and are interested in learning more
about serving as a paid Faculty Leader, please contact us as well.

Finally, HOUSING is also available for the duration of the program to
all students and faculty, although it is not required for
participants to stay at the facility we operate. Our housing
facility is located in Arlington, VA directly across the Potomac
River from Georgetown and easily accessible by METRO (DC's subway
system). Rooms are double-occupancy and single-sex.
The Washington Center also offers more long-term INTERNSHIP programs
in the Independent Sector on a semester basis (fall, spring, summer).
Again, credit is awarded by the student's home institution and
scholarships are also available to students accepted into this
