I'm going to take this opportunity to give everyone a break from the monotony
of these posts about archiving the list in order to inform everyone that I
found the bus station here in Danbury.
Also, I would like to point out something to all those people who will be
serving as voting delegates to the national convention. Last night, I was
looking over the large pile of crap that people call proposed legislation, and
besides thinking about how much I'd like to throttle a few of these people for
wasting the Fraternity's time, I found something that if it passes, could be
seriously bad. I don't have the legislation proposals in front of me, so I'm
gonna have to wing it. Someone proposed that a national guideline be
established for determining what it means to be a member "in good standing." In
order to be "in good standing" one would have to perform I think at least 20
hours of community service per semester. This is not a problem (well, it's not
a problem for it to be proposed). Later on in the pile of crap, there was a
proposal for changing the way that Life Membership fees are structured. The
wording of this second proposal states something to the effect that Life
Memberships will be available to students at the undergraduate rate for up to
six months after they graduate, and that the fee will rise to alumni rates
after that. In order to obtain a Life Membership, you need to either be a
current undergrad, or an alumni member IN GOOD STANDING with the fraternity.
Just being the anally retentive technocrat that I am, I will point out that
this would mandate alumni that wish to become life members to perform at least
20 hours of service per semester. This will prolly be a touchy issue. I
personally have no problem with it, I just think that our VD's need to be aware
of this.
There are a few things that kind of bug me tho, and I might as well say
something here. First of all, a national service requirement, although it is a
very noble intention, would be very difficult to enforce at the national level.
The national office would have to leave it up to the chapters to enforce, and
it really doesn't work that well. We tried this for a while at ADH at SUNY
Albany, but it didn't work.
Also, there was a proposal to make it so that an advisor can not serve as a
voting delegate anywhere. This, IMHO, is a phenomenally bad idea. There are
many chapters that I can think of,
where the advisor is the only voice that the chapter has. Either because the
chapter does not have a high number of actives, or because the chapter is very
young with not too much in the line of experience. The point of an advisor is
to do just that, advise. Sometimes, it is necessary to have the chapter's
advisors play a more active role, but my opinion on that is a topic for a whole
different discussion.
Finally, there was a proposal that from this point forward life memberships on
the national board of directors only be given out to past national presidents.
I think this is also a very bad idea. There are many people around that the
national board could prolly benefit from, and to shut them out like that would
just not be right. I wouldn't mind a proposed motion that new life members
would need a majority of the board's vote, but just blanketly shutting out
someone's input based simply on the fact that they did not serve as national
president is absurd.
Generally, most of the crap that is being brought forward is nothing short of a
waste of time.
