I like the slogan. It says what I think of when it comes to APO;
however, it may not say the same to someone else. I think that the simple
saying of Leadership, Friendship, Service serves APO just fine. I don't
see a real need for an "official" slogan. I think taking the time on the
floor to argue over whether or not to adopt this could be better used for
figuring out things like the service hour mandate (which I have mixed
feeling about), or the time could be given back to the delegates to attend
something other than the business meetings.
Service hour mandate...
On one hand I see that the regulation of service hours a great
idea, just not on the national level. I like the idea of there being a
national standard of hours but it should be a low number such to give the
chapters the ability to move up from there. The low number would be just
enough to keep the chapter doing service but not truly interfer with the
u-grads classwork. I think regulating the hours for alumni to be in good
standing in order to become a life member is genuinely a waste of time.
If an alumnus wants to do service they can, don't mandate it for life
membership standing. If the proposal passes, I have this funny feeling
that the number of new applications for life membership will go down.
On the other hand, I can see where the mandated service hours
would be an interference with the chapters that have the policy of
requiring a certain number of projects to be completed in order for the
u-grad to be active. I think there could be a happy medium, why not allow
the national office to pass the authority of a service project/hours
mandate to the realm of the regional director. I think the regional
director is going to have a better idea of how the chapters run in their
area than the national office does.
