I understand why a chapter would want a service requirement. What I don't think
is a good idea is to make it a national requirement. This is something that I
very strongly feel should be decided by the chapters. If the Chapter at Texas
A&M wants to determine who is dead weight and who is actually active, they
could add something to the CHAPTER bylaws. There is absolutely no need to
burden the national fraternity with chapter level enforcement. If this passes,
it also means that people like Pat Burke and other people in the national
office, will have to devote some time to checking up on the chapters to make
sure that they are in compliance with this national bylaw. To be perfectly
honest, I think that this motion will die on the floor. I don't think it will
even pass committee. Frankly, that's fine by me. IMHO, service is service, and
it should not be required. Service is best when it is completely voluntary, and
you do it out of a genuine desire to improve someone else's life, not because
the national office will declare you inactive if you don't.
