It pains me to see this discussion break down to the relationship
between the BSA and APO. The principles of the Scout Law should be
considered on their own merit regardless of who else holds the
values.
Trustworthy - Do you keep your word? Can people trust you?
Loyal - Do you support and try to improve you community, school,
family, and nation?
Helpful - Do you do good? Are other people better off because of what
you do?
Friendly - Do you make stangers feel comfortable and welcome?
Courteous - Are you polite? Do you do those little things that make
others feel respected?
Kind - Do you show compassion for those who can never repay you?
Obedient - Do you work within the system to change things for the
better?
Cheerful - Do people enjoy being around you? Do you make others feel
good?
Thrifty - Do you use resources (monitary, environmental, time)
wisely?
Brave - Do you have the courage to stand up for what is right in the
face of criticism?
Clean - Do you respect the decency and dignity of others?
Reverent - Not "Believe in God" (look up the word for yourself) but
do you treat religious beliefs (regardless of which belief) with
solemn respect?
If anyone can find fault with these twelve principles, then removing
them from Alpha Phi Omega should be discussed. If, however, they
stand on their own merit, regardless of what other organizations
adhere to them, I say keep them.
