All Male Chapters and Survival.

A couple of statistics about the all-male chapters of Alpha Phi Omega
(I'm using the school names here rather than the chapter names for clarity)
The original 1976 agreement was simply that the fraternity would allow
women and the National Fraternity would not force the all-male chapters
to go co-ed. This has been stretched a little in that as of 1979 a new
chapter could charter all-male if it wished (Gannon U. mentions that in
their history) and as of 1986 a chapter rechartered all-male (Howard U.).
However neither of these is allowed anymore. As such the only way to get
more all-male chapters is to charter chapters at the all-male schools
that currently don't have chapters (Morehouse and Hampden-Sydney)
There are currently about 30 all-male chapters ranging geographically
from U of Minnesota-Duluth to Florida A&M and from U of Maine to Prairie
View A&M U. However since I pledged in 1986, there has been about one
less all-male chapter each year. The reasons vary from going co-ed
(Capital U.) to Charter Revocation (Florida Memorial C.) to colonizing a
social greek (Villanova) to being declared Null & Void (NC A&T U.), but
it does seem to be pretty steady.
However, this next year will probably be a heavy one in that regards.
Monmouth College will almost certainly be revoked in Phoenix and St. Louis
U. -Parks College is merging with the main campus of SLU (which has a
co-ed chapter). Also, from what I understand; the Citadel, in admitting
Female Cadets, has determined that all student activities (except
intercollegiate sports) will be open to all cadets, but it may be a while
before any of the Female Cadets express interest in APO.
