How's everybody doing?? Great, 'cause I got somethin' to say
Mike McCaffrey wrote some things that must be addressed. But I gotta say IMHO, as long as I have been on APO-L, my words may have been strong but never to degrade or insult (BTW, anyone who's fuming over my Gene Rayburn sig post should know that Mr. Rayburn said it as an honest-to-god slip-of-the-tongue and not to be sexist toward
women. I have the clip to prove it. It was a mistake he made, albeit a hilarious one, I'm sure 90% of those who heard laughed. I just posted it to elicit a similar response, al'ight?, lighten up), but brother to brother, if I sugarcoated and buttered up my words (read: said what you wanted to hear), I would have done no one no favors that way. You are all my bros and you will always be my bros AFAIC.
That being said, let's proceed.
>Suppose APO has been founded all-white, and in 1976, went all-races, instead of
>all gender
Technically, APO was founded by all-whites, though not by design (I hope not). The 1st chapter at a black college was Delta Phi @ Johnson C. Smith U. (4-17-47)
Until then, I'm sure APO was at least 90% Caucasion. But I get what you're driving at.
>...and a chapter wanted to stay white...out of it's rich tradition.
Lots of FRATERNITES have EVERY chapter all or predominately white out of tradition. That's how the "Black Greeks" got started. Blacks couldn't join the white ones out of "tradition" so they created their own GLOs and thus their own tradition, but I digress. If a chapter wanted to stay white, so be it. Between the Black Greek tradition(s) and despite the fact that many historically white frats/chapters have opened it's racial boundaries, you don't see too many blacks tearing down the door to join them, and those that do are labled "Uncle Toms" and "house ni**as", your argument, while I see your reasoning, is by an large a very minor one.
>..you don't understand the brotherhood at co-ed chapters
BULL$#!T!!! In case you haven't read my signature, I am the alumnus of not one, but TWO co-ed chapters. I have witnessed about 5 pledge/active initiations at these chapters. I have been a spec (pronounced spesh-meaning "big") to a pledge at one of these chapters. I have been the historian at the other chapter. I just recently went on a retreat with these brothers at a cabin in rural PA discussing problems in the chapter, how we can remedy it as well as making "battle plans" for upcoming chapter events, including hosting sectionals and the Spring Formal. I have seen both types of chapters in action and I support them all wholeheartedly, but I am VERY qualified to say that the brotherhood between the two chapters is different. NOT good v. bad, mind you. Just different. That being said, I don't think we should neglect one for the other, regardless of reason. I have been in this fraternity for 4 years, six months, four days, twenty hours, seven minutes and 35 seconds (!
and counting) and I have seen and
known a lot of goings-on with this fraternity. How long have you been in it?
>..they (all-male chapters) are doing an injustice to the women that want to join >Alpha Phi Omega.
I have not heard one complaint or concern on APO-L concerning anybody who is currently on an all-male chapter's yard (campus) expressing dissent because they ATTEMPTED to join APO and was turned down, nor have I heard any similar dissent from any campus administration. What I have heard were these incredible mundane hypotheses and scenarios from non-chapter brothers speaking from an assumed perspective, thus making the problem just what it is--as far as APO-L goes, IMAGINED. For an injustice to happen, someone has to be wronged. Many of these injustice claims I am hearing are from unsubstanciated sources. Remember, you gotta be there to see what's really going on. That's what made me hot!!!
As for Mike's fourth concern, that's his entitled opinion. 'Nuff said.
Peace
