As a Central Florida alumnus, I was thrilled to hear that Psi Omega chose
this year to honor a man who had no ties to the fraternity.
Jerry Richardson was coach of the women's basketball team for four years.
On August 30, 1996, he was killed when the van he was driving was hit by a
stolen, speeding car. Coach Richardson was 40 years old.
In his four years at UCF, his teams had a 42-68 record and 1 NCAA Tournament
appearance. But the measure of his impact goes far beyond the court.
He served as a board member of the Central Florida Coalition for the
Homeless and oversaw a regional office at UCF of the Center for the Study of
Sport in Society. The center deals with the problems of student athletes on
campus and focuses on racism and discrimination in sports.
Prior to his arrival at UCF, he coached the girls' basketball team at the
Navajo National Reservation at Shiprock, N.M. In 10 years, his teams won
four state high school championships. Perhaps even more importantly, nearly
all of his players continued their education after high school.
The Jerry Richardson Most Valuable Player Award and a memorial fund have
been established in his memory by the university. But I am even more proud
of the fact that Psi Omega has chosen Jerry Richardson to be its pledge
class namesake.
Good job gang.
