Hello all! My name is Amy DeLisse. I'm Vice President of Service in the
Beta Rho chapter at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I recently
joined a Volunteers listserv on AOL, so I introduced myself and APO, and
asked for service project ideas. This was one response, and since it has
such wonderful praise for one of our chapters, I'd like to share it with
everybody!

I coordinate volunteers for a hands-on science museum in San Francisco, CA
called the Exploratorium. We don't specialize in the sort of team-building
done-in-a-day volunteer opportunities that APO prefers, so it took a bit
more planning to come up with something meaningful for both sides; we're all
glad we did.

The group from UC Berkeley came in on a Saturday and worked in teams to
clean several sites on the floor. Working with the Exhibit Support and
Operations staff, they were able to spit-polish favorite exhibits that often
have visible reminders of their "best-loved" status -- sticky chocolate muck
and other evidence of a child's visit. Afterward, the volunteers stayed and
played for free.

This kind of group volunteer visit was new to staff (I've been on board for
1 1/12 years) and I think what impressed them so favorably was not the the
good work and positive attitudes, but the fact that there was a 'method to
their madness' -- the students had chosen to live in a community that
promoted involvement at this level. ( For many, they didn't represent a
"typical" fraternity.)

Thank you for calling attention to the APO program on this list.
