I'm thrilled to see this kind of discussion on the list. Charlie has a
wonderful opportunity to allow the chapter to decide what role advisors
should take. I think that every chapter should do this when soliciting
new advisors and even new brothers. People drop out of the organization
when their expectations are not being met.
When I was a chapter officer, I recruited an advisor knowing that he
could not attend chapter meetings due to his weekly Boy Scout Troop
meeting. The chapter indicated that this would be ok. Guess what?
Several quarters later, the brothers complained because he didn't make
the chapter meetings. This situation worked itself out because I told
the brotherhood that he agreed to be an advisor with the "expectation"
that he would not have to be at meetings. If the chapter needs him, he
will be there and has been a very active advisor otherwise.
Some of my random thoughts on advisors. We are all adults (18 - 80) and
can handle ourselves at meetings/service projects. I feel that advisors
are resources and if they want to be extremely active, great! They can
provide guidance and advice when the chapter has problems. When
chapters call me, I refer them quite often to their advisors. An
effective advisor. I am also an advocate for advisors (and for similar
reasons honorary membership) in high places that may only come to a banquet
or ceremony. Again, these types of advisors can provide valuable resources.
Just my thoughts.
