S.L.E.D. draws Near
-------------------
=09It's only a few days until the semesterly S.L.E.D. event ot the
State University of New York at Brockport. That's right, our petitioning
group in the Section is hosting this Leadership event. Even if you
haven't registered for the event, it's not too la te to participate. The
theme this semester is "Leadership and Communication" and workshops will
concentrate on how good communication can help us all become better
leaders. The workshops will include, but are not limited to, Leadership
Burnout, Chapter Leadership Styles Ro undtable, How to build a Budget, How
to plan and run an effective E-board Meeting, and others! It looks to be
a great learning day topped off by the ever popular Section 89 game.=20
Directly following the S.L.E.D. will be actual sledding if there is snow.=
=20
Hey... it's western New York... you never know! Anyways, I hope to see
you all there. Most of the staff members will be there also. We are
looking for 100% of the chapters represented. It would be great for
everyone to get to know the Brockport Chapter and see the drive and
dedication they have.=20

Graduating Advice by Rich Engle
-----------------

=09With graduation coming up for many individuals, or even those =20
thinking about it some time...
=09Things to do after graduation/before graduation.

Before Graduation:
=091) Never give up hope.
=092) Try to interview as many times as possible before graduation.=20
=09=09It took me 20 interviews to get a job.=20
=093) See number one.
=094) Even if you are way before graduation, consider a co-op
=09=09position. It is very much worth it, because it gives you
=09=09something to talk about in your interviews and makes working=20
=09=09seems less intimidating.
=095) Visit your Career Development Center ( if you have one) at your
=09=09campus. The workers there can be very helpful. Often times=20
=09=09they can be a big help in getting interviews. Also use it to
=09=09prepare for interviews
=096) Keep yourself open to interviewing with companies that you may
=09=09not think of as being directly related to your field of=20
=09=09interest. After all, right now I may not be doing stuff=20
=09=09directly related to my field, but I am in a new area that I=20
=09=09like, and at a job with people that I like.=20
=097) During interviews, you should stay positive. So mentioning
=09=09your fraternity at some time during the interview can=EDt hurt but
=09=09chose your time wisely.
=098) Think about where you=EDd like to live. You will be asked this alot.
=099) Some neat web sites I saw were :
=09=09=09http://www.careermosaic.com/
=09=09=09http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=3Demployment

After Graduation:

=091) See number one above. This has been a tough one for me at times.
=092) Community service is a good way to renew good feelings about
=09=09yourself.=20
=093) If you have no job, think about a higher degree. I had to get
=09=09my Masters, and I also had to rethink my career goals.
=094) You still have to be positive now, but now it is to make new friends
=09=09... which can take a long time.
=095) Try planning on what you=EDd like to achieve. Planning can be as
=09=09simple as writing down what you want to achieve/do. At
=09=09worst it gives you hope. At best it can work.
=096) Learn to drive and get lost. Or should I get say, get used to
=09=09driving and getting lost, if you already haven=EDt. I have=20
=09=09already gotten lost in Rochester, Alfred, Syracuse, Geneseo, New
=09=09Jersey, Ithaca, Buffalo... etc. It helps you to familiarize=20
=09=09yourself with an area. =20
=097) You can do what you want now, but remember be leader, be
=09=09friend, and be of service.

=09If you wonder why I should make up a list, when it is your choice
to find your future ... Well, I guess I have never seen a list like this
from an APO perspective. Plus I hope it helps - I am after all, a brother.

Service Spotlight
-----------------

=09In this new segment, we'd like to contrate on publicizing a
service project that has caught the staff's attention. The first project
comes from the University at Buffalo. The service project is called
Cause for Celebration. Cause is an annual event put on by the local AIDS
organizations as a fundraiser to help AIDS research. The local chapter of
Alpha Phi Omega has helped setup and breakdown the event for the past
three years. This year the chapter has put an extra emphasis on this
project and are making letters with a red ribbon pattern on them. All
Brothers participating in the project will be wearing them. =20
=09The second project this issue comes from SUNY Oswego. They have a
project called Pennies for Penfield where the local chapter has been
collecting pennies and spare change for the University Library. To date
the chapter has helped raise over $5,000 for the library. =20
=09If you would like your projects mentioned here or know of a neat
project at another chapter, please let a staff member know so we can place
it here.
