                                        15 February 1997

Dear Colleague,

We would like to tell you about our friend, Joanne Grannan. From the age
of 16, Joanne cared for her sister while finishing high school and
maintaining a full time job.

She was adopted into our family of emergency medical technicians and became an EMT in 1989. As a member of the Cherry Hill Emergency Medical Services, squad 13-8 (formerly 13-1), she left a lasting impression with her
bubbly personality and unending optimism.

During the last two years, Joanne has experienced trauma which no 29 year
old woman should be forced to endure. This loving mother and health care
worker is fighting an uphill battle against unstable bronchial asthma
requiring frequent use of hospital respirators.

Her medical condition was recently complicated by a Hazardous Materials
exposure at work. As a result, she has experienced extensive
hospitalization, respiratory therapy with steroids, osteoporosis,
fractures of several bones, and multiple seizures. She has kept a
cheerful outlook while additionally struggling with numerous difficult
domestic issues.

Today, our Joanne was transferred to Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia
for diagnosis of a rare and serious pancreatic abnormality.

As emergency workers, it is difficult for many of us to accept our own
vulnerability. Our injured colleague has shaken our own emotions and
raised our own fears, but she has also served us as an example of
strength in the face of danger.

Joanne has served her community for half of her life and asked nothing in
return. Now she needs our emotional support. Please take the time to
send her a note or card. It would mean more to her than you can
imagine.
