The latest on national service news from our friends at the National and
Community Service Coalition:

SERVICE ALERT 2..25.97 . . . . . . . . .
National and Community Service Coalition

Battle of Words Renewed?
Kansas Republican Congressman Todd Tiahrt has renewed his efforts to
eliminate AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National Service. Citing
wasteful expenditures of taxpayer dollars, Rep. Tiahrt may launch a
legislative effort to repeal the National and Community Service Act or, in
the alternative, mount a campaign to eliminate Federal funding for national
service during House consideration of the VA, Housing and Urban Development,
and Independent Agencies FY 1998 Appropriations Bill later this spring.

In response to the Tiahrt missive, six congressmen (three Democrats and three
Republicans) offered a competing view of AmeriCorps in a letter to all
colleagues in the House. Citing an Aguire International report which studies
ten percent of AmeriCorps participants, the six praised the tutoring and
mentoring of 63,000 students, collection and distribution of 974,000 pounds
of food, conduct of violence-prevention after-school programs for 50,000
children, and energy audits of 18 million square feet of buildings as but
limited proof of AmeriCorps' "getting things done."

The February 13 Dear Colleague, written by Reps. Christopher Shays (R-CT),
Jim Walsh (R-NY), Connie Morrella (R-MD), Jim Moran (D-VA), Steny Hoyer
(D-MD), and Tim Roemer (D-IN), was accompanied by an editorial citing
bipartisan support for the upcoming Presidents' Summit for America's Future.

Senate VA/HUD Hearing Next Up: March 4
CNS CEO Harris Wofford will testify before the Senate Appropriations
Subcommittee on VA/HUD and Independent Agencies on March 4 at 9:30 a.m. On
the agenda, fiscal year 1998 funding for AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America,
the Points of Light Foundation, and the Corporation for National Service.
