I have experience with three chartering groups and while neither really
fits the "normal" setup, I think it might be useful as comparison.
The "normal" setup is that the person who first came up with the idea of
bringing APO to the campus and lead the group from that point to
chartering...
In the first two the Chartering president stayed active, but the Petitioning
group had undergone almost total turnover from the initital interest
group including the original president had long since gone by chartering.
(and in one case the founding person was persona-non-grata at the chapter
by chartering)
At the third, the chartering president was a second semester senior and
was followed in office by his fiancee who was a year behind him in
graduation. (The fiancee was the primary person who started the group)
(So there really wasn't all that much time that they had "lost" control)
I think the answer may fall into one of two related areas:
1) Posessiveness: This is 'my' chapter, I brought it to fruition, what
the h-ll are you people doing to it.
2) Overqualification: I've lead a group through to chartering, what is
left to do?
The answer for number 2 is normally much easier than number 1. For number
2, FIND something beyond the chapter level for them to do as sectional (or
regional) staff. In at least two cases in the last 3 or 4 years, that
thing has been to run for sectional chair as an undergraduate and win.
(Section 7 currently and Section 8(?) a couple of years ago)
Sometimes the same answer can work for number 1, IF the brother can pull
themselves out the chapter day-to-day activities.
