I have heard a lot of different things about bylaws over the past couple
of days from this list. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised to hear that
some bylaws automatically assign an inactive or associate status to a
brother if, for example, that person does not do X number of service hours
or attend X number of meetings. Our bylaws have certain basic
requirements for a brother to stay active in good standing. He/she must
attend induction and initiation, pay dues, complete a service hour
requirement determined by a vote of the active body each semester, serve
on a project committee, and do anything else that we vote into
requirements for that semester. Anyone who fails to complete the
requirements for that semester isn't automatically put on probation, but
their name is taken to the exec board so that they can look at each
individual situation. The exec board must, by majority, vote that active
into a probationary status.

This semester, our service hour requirement is to set our own personal
service hour goal and meet that goal. The rationale for this is that each
of us have different schedules, and that we know ourselves well enough
to know how many hours we can handle in a semester. So far, it's been
working really well, and our VP of Service has doing a wonderful job
coordinating the service of our chapter.

Just a couple of thoughts,

Jonathan
