It is times like these when the work of Alpha Phi Omega shines to help
those in need.

By far, the best thing Alpha Phi Omega Brothers can do is to PREPARE for
additional disasters, which inevitably will come. I have been nagging
Mrn. Tomusiak for some time to pursue establishing a Statement of
Understanding with the American Red Cross.

The purpose of this document is to establish a written understanding on
how Alpha Phi Omega *MAY* be able to help in a disaster. It would outline
a "call-down" method for requesting aid from Chapters. It would serve as
a guide for all APO and ARC chapters to follow locally.

Also, by establishing this understanding, we agree to ENCOURAGE Brothers
to obtain the necessary training needed to become Red Cross Disaster
Workers, locally, or in other parts of the country. A trained Brother
going on summer break, for example, would be a valuable resource if he or
she could actually go to help as a Red Cross relief worker.

It has been, and continues to be, my personal challenege to convince APO
chapters around the country to take the time (just a few hours) to have
their members trained as Red Cross Disaster volunteers for then next
disaster that may affect YOUR town!

Being the largest student organization in the country, this offers the
American Red Cross a TREMENDOUS resource if properly trained. Several
APO chapters in Florida and New York have already worked with their local
ARC chapters in having their members trained.

If you would like any additional information on how these chapters have
done it and how you could at yours, e-mail me and I would be glad to help.
