This afternoon myself and 5 brothers from my chapter, including a Past
National President, E. Ross Forman and his wife, our Sectional Chair, and
a brother from a local chapter all traveled up to Bethlehem, PA to do an
interview with Helen Horton, wife of Frank Reed Horton. A few months ago,
E. Ross was contacted and asked to coordinate this interview so we can
have a historical record of the memories Helen had of Frank and his
dealings with Alpha Phi Omega before she passed away. Being that Ross was
an alumnus of Zeta Theta, our chapter was asked to perform the interview.
Needless to say, it was a great moment in Alpha Phi Omega's history. We
spent about 1.5 hours asking Helen various questions and listening to her
recount what she could remember. Some of the details she discussed with us
are those we could have gotten nowhere else. At 96 years of age, Helen
showed a lot of eagerness to share what she knew with us. Furthermore, she
was also very excited to have us there. To commemorate the afternoon, we
presented Mrs. Horton with a mug from Drexel University along with a set
of letters and also sang the toast song along with her, which in itself
was an experience. As some of you may or may not know, Helen is a brother
of this fraternity. Upon some editing of the video, it will be sent off
to Nationals who will be publishing something in the T&T regarding this.
Also, a copy of the video will be held by Nationals Historical Archivist
for obvious reasons. Additionally, at the upcoming Region II conference in
December, portions or the entire edited interview will be shown for those
who didn't have the opportunity to be there when it happened. Once again,
this was a very important day in our history. Had Helen passed away prior
to this, an important part of our history would have been lost forever.
Thankfully it wasn't. It may be a few years away, but wouldn't it great
to have Helen there with us to celebrate the 75th anniversary of what her
husband started? If anyone has any questions regarding this, feel free to
reply to me and I'll be more than happy to answer them.
In Leadership, Friendship, and Service
Bill
