In response to your post, our chapter (Alpha Phi at Washington University
in St. Louis) has had co-officers for every office except president. Our
chapter, which boast 100+ members, often finds that two people may be
better equiped to handle the demands of office than one. Additionally,
some people just fell more comfortable running with someone than running
alone. Often, tha pair somehow brings a balance to the office. For
example, with the office of VP of Fellowship, one person may be heavily
involved in IM sports and large social gatherings and accordingly
respresent the desires of the members attending those events, while the
other person may better represent the desires that some members have for
small less boisterous events. So, the majority of the brothers can
identify with one of the vp's and feel comfortable as part of the
fellowship program. For the office of vp of Service, often the co's
will devide the office based on type of project ie big or small or
elderly, construction, children, hospital etc. Of course co's do not
always function well and running as such is not for everyone.
Does your chapter prohibit running as co's or has it just never been done
before? We find that each of our offices can be done alone (with chapter
support) or as co's (with chapter support) it just depends on the people
running and what events are planned for that semester.
