I think a lot of the opinions voiced on this subject make a lot of sense
and much really depends on how a chapter is structured and what each
individual wants out of the structure. At our chapter we have a harder
time getting people to serve on committees than to chair individual events
or run for office. In response to the idea of having nine service
committees, we just would not be able to staff them and that adds a lot of
meetings to the already hectic schedules of our officers. Our treasurer
is, according to our bylaws, the head of the fundraising committee.
Additionally, for many of our officers, much of the semester planning
happens prior to the beginning of the semester, i.e. over summer and
winter breaks, so it would be hard to mobilize a committee in advance
since much of our chapter is from the east coast, or at least outside of
St. Louis. We do currently have a committee for each office which is
overseen by the office holder but it does not sound like our chapter
functions like yours, Cindy.
Our system works very well for our chapter, everyone understands their
role and how to go about taking on leadership positions. We have many
events that require chairs (membership weekend, pledge retreat, active
retreat, charity week, formal, semi-formal etc.) and each of these have
their own committees, so there is not a shortage of leadership roles. We
do not suffer from a lack of tasks more a lack of involvement. Those
brothers who are involved in leadership seem to be involved across the
board, they are what we call core members, the others are the ones we have
a problem reaching especially since leadership is delegated early on in
the semester if not in the week between exams and departures for vacation.
