FYI: Central Texas Tornados has been declared a NATIONAL American Red
Cross disaster operation. This means additional personnel, supplies, and
assistance will be arriving from all over the country within the next
couple of days.
Once the national DR has been established, there will be a Voluntary
Agencies (VOLAG) Officer assigned. This person coordinates relief
activities of all the numerous voluntary agencies (including Alpha Phi
Omega) involved. If you do not get a "positive" response from the local
CenTex chapter, or feel APO's resources are not being used to its fullest
potential, wait a couple of days and ask to speek to the VOLAG Officer.
Another, more immediate option, is to call your local Emergency
Management office and offer assistance. There is a specific Emergency
Support Function (ESF) which is designed to handle volunteers. They may
have a more immediate use of your skills in areas other than mass care
(which the Red Cross provides). This may include, but not limited to,
debris removal, cleanup, traffic control, transportation, etc.
(functions which the Red Cross does not serve).
Reason I know? I am a trained, experienced, Red Cross Disaster Relief
worker. They asked me if I could fly out from Florida tomorrow
morning. I would, but unfortunately, I haven't passed my kidney stone
yet and can't go out on assignment with that kind of medical condition.
If there is anything else I can do to help, please do not hesitate to
ask. It's what I am here and trained for. If I can't come to texas, least
I can do is help from here.
