Hi my name is Katie, and I'm one of the Co-VPs of Membership at the Alpha
Phi Chapter at Washington University in St. Louis. My other Co is Kristi
Lei. Kristi will be appointed the pledge trainer for our chapter for the
coming semester. Our chapter has some fairly long standing pledge
requirements. Our pledges are required to attend rituals (of course), do
18 hours service, and they are required to attend the project set up by
their pledge vp of service. 15 hours of fellowship; the pledges must
spend this time with at least 2 actives, meeting do not count, and if a
pledge lives with two or more other actives, that doesn't count. Pledges
must attend all pledge meeting, and four active meetings. They are
required to get the signatures of all of their fellow pledges (assuming
the pledge class isn't huge, most of our pledges classes lately have sized
around 30-35), and they must get 30 active signatures ( we have roughly
100 actives). Pledges must attend a pledge retreat, where they do bonding
exercises, learn about chapter stuff, and sign book usually.

When it comes to teaching the pledges, each pledge trainer takes on
his/her own style. Kristi and I have agreed to have the Chpater provide
three ring binders at the first pledge meeting after ritual. The binder
will include a syllabus of the reading required for each week's
pledge meeting, a copy of the homework they are expected to have
completed before coming to the meeting, the pledge manual from national,
and a chapter supplement. The supplement includes various chapter
history. Quizzes will be random, and unannounced.

Also, because some pledges classes in the past have had problems raising
money to cover their activities, the pledge class is often required to
help at one fun raising event (phon-a-thon, car wash, auction, etc.)
This aids in keeping the pledge treasurer from raising all the money by
him/herself.

I think I've covered all the bases. If you have anyother questions or
comments, feel free to respond. I don't subscribe to the national APO-L,
yet, but my roomate does forward all relevant messages.

In L,F, & S,
Katie Amelunke
