Hi!
I was the treasurer last semester for Alpha Phi chapter at
Washington University in St. Louis. With the due date for National
Dues rapidly approaching, I bet fundraising is on the minds of lots
of chapters!
Alpha Phi had a great fundraising semester last spring (we
fundraised over $1,800 when our goal was only $1,000) so I thought
I'd share some of our ideas.
1) Carwashes and more carwashes. We go to a gas station and stand
on the corner offering free car washes (donations accepted) and
explain to people who we are while we wash their cars. From this we
make up to $200 for a 4 hour wash.
2) Ted Drewes sales. We sit at tables in the student union and sell
frozen custard to students for a profit. We get a small discount
from the frozen custard place.
3) Bachelor & Bachelorette Auction. This was our most successful
fundraiser last semester. It made about $800. The chairs were two
_very_ enthusiastic pledges. We found volunteers to 'walk', and
offer a specified "date" to whomever purchased them. For instance,
Bob walks the catwalk to his favorite song while the MC's explain who
he is and that he will cook dinner for his 'date.' Not only was this
a great fundraiser, it was fun!
4) Pizza eating contest! Dominoes here in St. Louis has been nice
enough to donate pizzas to us for this event. We charge a dollar or
two for an entry fee, then use stop watches to time how fast
participants can eat a slice of pizza. The gross part: the judges
must make sure that the pizza is actually eaten!
5) Phonathons. Our University offers money to student groups who
will call parents and alums asking for annual pledges to the
university. Perhaps we are not the only school to offer this.
