New Publication for Florida's Student Volunteers
The Florida Office of Collegiate Volunteerism (FOCV)
would like to announce the September 1997 publication of
Volunteer 101: a Newsletter to Educate + Activate Collegiate
Volunteerism. A total of 5,000 copies of Volunteer 101
will be distributed to all colleges and universities in Florida.
The premiere issue of Volunteer 101 features how to have volunteer hours
recorded on a student transcript, cartoons by Bill Otersen,
line drawings by Mark Hinson and an interview with Board of Regent
Chair, Steve Uhlfelder. Other articles highlight responses to the
Presidents' Summit on Volunteerism from students in Florida,
a debate on service as a graduation requirement, interviews with
volunteer activists sponsoring America Reads initiatives in south
Florida, as well as job, grant, internship and volunteer opportunity
listings.
Volunteer 101 is an11X17, full-color, 8-page publication.
Graphic Designer, Ty Andrews described his approach to the
newsletter as, "a deconstructed publication. It maximizes the
creative freedom of an image-based magazine without sacrificing
the informational content of a newsletter." As a result,
Volunteer 101 is a maga/paper designed to inform and entertain
today's media-savvy students.
In conjunction with this debut, FOCV will unveil a
supplementary web site, http://www.volunteer101.org, which will
reflect and augment the articles and ideas
in this and subsequent issues of Volunteer 101. The new
web site makes the newsletter available to each of Florida's
1 million college students and
provides readers with the latest in interactive technology.
The editor is accepting queries for articles, interviews,
cartoons, line drawings, photography and poetry. While
anyone is eligible to write for Volunteer 101, topics must
concern Florida's student volunteers. Send queries along with
SASE to Editor, Volunteer 101, 345 S. Magnolia Dr., Suite
