service projects and membership

Some brothers have been posting messages asking about service project
ideas. I just finished a two year run as Upsilon Rho's VP-Service so I
thoght I could offer a few suggestions.
Our chapter sponsors four blood drives on our campus every year (2
fall, 2 spring) and those happen here on our campus which attracts a lot
of notice for our chapter when people see a group of APhiO brothers
gathered at a blood drive. The blood drives are part of a "Blood Bowl"
competition with another college (sounds kind of Klingon doesn't it?).
The winners gets their names on and custody of the floating Blood Bowl
trophy for as long as they win it. It helps get people out to the blood
drives so they can "compete" with the other school.
We also do a lot of off campus projects with the Charleston County
Parks Commission. We help with their events during the year. It helps
give the chapter and the entire fraternity a good reputation in the
city. We are usually given T-shirts for the events we work at and lunch
(sometimes dinner too if they're really late days). They also invite us
to an appreciation dinner for all of their volunteers every summer. I
didn't pick their projects because we'd get T-shirts, off campus meals,
and other sorts of stuff but it can be a good motivation for some
brothers to get involved. Remember to try and make the projects fun or
else no one will want to come to the projects. For ours we did a lot of
good work and had a good time doing it. It can be done!
We also just tripled the size of our chapter last year. We had about
twenty-seven brothers at the end of last year as opposed to the nine we
started out with. Talk to people who are already on campus to get them
to join. Have some brothers there wearing letters to help when the new
freshmen move in every Fall. Try to get as many freshmen and sophomores
as you can to pledge (that will be good brothers of course) so they can
be involved in the chapter for 2 or 3 or 4 or however many years they're
at the school. This will give the chapter a nice sized membership to
work with as well as new brothers with fresh ideas. Plus consider having
a pledge class in the Spring semester if you don't have one already. The
best thing is to do them every other Spring so that the brothers can
take that off Spring Semester to get to know each other
