If I remember correctly, my old chapter didn't call the money that
goes to the national office "chapter dues". Even if they did, I still
think it might be a good idea to be clear to the actives (especially
new members) that there's a set of fees that are imposed by the
national office, and that money is used by the National Office to
support the chapters. If you keep the "fees" seperate from the
"dues", it may be easier for people to see where the money is going.
If you don't people might be surprised when you tell them almost all
of their $15 (hypothetical) chapter dues get mailed away and the
chapter never sees it.
As far as actual chapter dues (not fees), it can be nice to budget
things like banquets and the like into the dues. That way, the
banquet committees have money to reserve things, and the actives have
a good reason to go to things (they already paid for them). Of
course, some people don't like the idea of high dues, but in my
experience it makes life easier.
