Hi...

We have official bylaw sections governing our elections, but they run
sorta like this:

Because elections take so long, we have two chapter meetings in which we
deal with elections, the first one being held during the week after
initiation. We hold nominations for all offices at the chapter
meeting before the first election meeting. A nomination must be made,
then seconded, then accepted by the brother or soon-to-be brother to be
added to the ballot.

Then, for the election of each office... nominations are again opened for
that office, and the final ballot is determined. All candidates leave
the room, and in alphabetical order, the following happens: the candidate
gives a speech and there's a question and answer period. After all
candidates have spoken and answered questions, the chapter holds
discussion with all the candidates out of the room. There are time
limits imposed on each of those items: speech, QA and discussion, because
it would take days to get through elections otherwise. :) After
discussion, all candidates return, and voting is done by secret ballot
and counted by advisors. A candidate may only win by majority vote of
brothers; if there is no majority, a run-off election (just voting, no
new speeches or anything) is held between the top two vote-getters.

Everyone hates elections in our chapter. They're two very long, long,
long meetings. I personally hate that that's the first real exposure a
new brother gets to the chapter directly after initiation. It really
turns a lot of them off. What can you do, though?

In LFS,
Jeni
