Rice University, in cooperation with Texas A&M University, is pleased to
announce the INAUGURAL SOUTHERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON STUDENT COMMUNITY
SERVICE to be held February 6-8, 1998 at Rice University in Houston, TX.
An estimated 400 students from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi,
and Texas are expected to convene for a weekend to engage in intense
workshops, presentations, and activities on student community service.
This conference will give students in the southern region an affordable and
fun forum to share ideas, learn from each others' successes and failures,
and foster relationships so that they may work together to promote
volunteerism and social change in the southern region.
Conference highlights include La-Verna Fountain, Director of Community
Programs at Save The Children U.S. presenting the keynote address, Defiant
Hope - Walking it Out; an Opportunities Fair, a chance for participants to
meet with local, national, and international service organizations;
outreach activities; a Hunger Banquet; a multimedia presentation by the
Institute for International Cooperation and Development; and interesting,
helpful, and pertinent workshops on service-learning, leadership
development, fundraising, and other topics related to student success in
community service.
This conference is limited to participants from Arkansas, Oklahoma,
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Conference registration packets were
mailed this week to colleges and universities in these states - look for
